A six year study involving adult’s ages 18 – 65 years of age with non specific mechanical neck pain of two to twelve weeks duration was recently completed and reported on in the January 2012 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.
The purpose of this study was to compare the use of over the counter medication to both spinal manipulation or neck exercises for relieving neck pain. The medications used included non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as Aleve and ibuprofen, as well as acetaminophen. With patients who did not respond or could not tolerate these drugs, narcotic medication and muscle relaxers were prescribed.
Outcomes were measured four times during the twelve week period and then followed up at 6 months and 1 year.
The conclusion? “Spinal manipulation (and neck exercises) led to similar short and long term outcomes” stated the authors, “but participants who received medication seemed to fare worse, with a consistently higher use of pain medications for neck pain throughout the trial observation period.”
