Sharon, 74 year old, entered this office seeking relief from what she believed was sciatica. She describes the onset of left buttocks, thigh and calf pain approximately 1 week in duration with cause unknown.
Orthopedic testing supported sciatic involvement, but examination of the skin along the course of this nerve revealed the early onset of multiple vesicle eruptions (skin lesions) establishing the diagnosis of shingles.
This patient was immediately sent back to her general practitioner to start on corticosteroids and antiviral medication to reduce the severity and complications of the condition.
