Shirley, a 67 year old female presented with vertigo (dizziness). Onset 4 months, cause unknown.
Shirley stated she was experiencing debilitating attacks of vertigo or dizziness (approx 2x/day) lasting 20-30 minutes. The patient informed Dr. Koch she has been working with a number of specialists, (EENT, Cardiologist, Ophthalmologist, Audiologist, etc.), along with a primary doctor to relieve this issue. An MRI of her head was performed, along with ultrasound of her corotids, Eco-cardiogram, etc, all essentially normal. The patient went through vestibular rehabilitation therapy with no help. Shirley stated that although none of the above doctors suggested seeing a chiropractor, she didn't know what else to do and her daughter is a patient of ours and suggested trying Koch Chiropractic.
Upon taking her history she revealed having fallen 1 week before onset of vertigo, but did not remember hurting herself. Examinations revealed noticeable upper cervical spine joint dysfunction (abnormal motion between 2 or more vertebrae), although overall head and neck range of motion felt normal to patient. These changes often result from different forms of trauma.
A treatment program was initiated with patient to restore normal upper cervical (neck) function. Patient was instructed to keep a daily journal. The first week after neck pain treatment, the patient's condition remained relatively unchanged. By the second week patient noticed both the frequency and intensity of episodes were diminished. By the third week patient reported symptoms resolution approaching 90%. Patient was released the following week with no symptoms.
