Kathy, a 61 year old female presents with neck pain resulting from a motor vehicle accident two days prior in which she was hit from behind while stopped at a red light. Kathy stated the neck pain progressively increased during the day of the accident and at the time of this evaluation experienced noticeable loss of range of motion. This patient presented with pain radiating into the left shoulder region.
Examination revealed a noticeable loss of range of motion at the level of the neck in movements to her left. Spasms were present at the neck and left upper back. Orthopedic testing revealed nerve impingement (pinched nerve) at the left cervical (neck) spine, producing the pain radiating into her left shoulder region. A treatment program was initiated for this patient consisting of light spinal manipulation, traction, and ultra sound. Within approximately one month, this patient experienced some residual neck pain, but no radiation of pain to her upper back and left shoulder. Range of motion at this point was approximately 50% improved from initial evaluation. Over the following 2 months her range of motion was restored. Kathy was educated on exercises to strengthen her neck muscles. She was released at that point to schedule on an as necessary basis.
