Jacob, a 14 year old male was brought into the office by his parents for evaluation and possible treatment of low back pain, onset several weeks. Jacob stated of onset during basketball practice, but, unaware of any single event causing symptoms.
Pain at time of examination was fairly constant, but definitely escalated with exertion. Examination revealed a noticeable loss of range of motion and associated muscle spasms at his low back. Examination further revealed the loss of this range of motion stemming specifically from the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae of this patients low back.
History and examination ruled out any discal involvement or organic cause. A 2 week course of therapy was recommended including manipulation of the lumbar spine to restore normal function at the patient’s lower lumbar spine. Patient was able to resume basketball within 1 week. One week later patient exhibited full painless range of motion upon examination and reported a full resolution of symptoms. Patient was released from care.
