Chiropractic profession enjoys the fact that it has noticeably less risk and side effects than drugs (including over the counter) and surgery. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) now recommends spinal manipulation treatment as a safe method of treatment of lower back pain.
We are blessed with an amazing design for our back, not only protecting our spinal cord but also allowing for tremendous range of motion at our back and neck. This occurs because we have thirty-three vertebrae from the base of our skull to the tail bone which encase our spinal cord but also interlock and move with each other. The movement of one vertebra upon one another is very precise and if for whatever reason this motion is altered (increased or decreased) pain typically ensues. This is called the biomechanical model of back pain, and is believed to occur in a large percentage of neck and back pain sufferers. Chiropractic adjustment is a precise technique, delivering a light force to a specific area of the spine to restore normal motion and therefore normal function to the spine. Pain medication only temporarily masks the symptoms of back pain, whereas the chiropractic adjustment (or manipulation) often is able to reduce or eliminate the pain by restoring normal function of the spine.
People considering chiropractic adjustment for the first time may have some apprehension because of the fear a treatment may be painful. The fact is, most patients state getting adjusted feels good and there is often a sense of some immediate relief. A small percentage of patients may go through some mild discomfort during or after treatment early in the onset of therapy. This is similar to starting a new exercise program in the sense the body is getting used to some changes that are being created. This generally subsides in a relatively short time.
Yes. There are many different causes of headaches. Research has proven mechanical problems in the neck, vascular problems and tightness in muscles in the neck and upper back can be major causes for severe and chronic headaches. With proper chiropractic care, the tension in your muscles and misalignments of your vertebra or neck can be corrected and help to reduce headache onset. Chiropractic adjustments, trigger point stimulation and posture correction exercises have all been proven to reduce headaches and alleviate stress and pain in patients bodies. Milwaukee Chiropractors are well educated. Chiropractic education can be compared with medical education in many respects. The difference is Chiropractors don’t prescribe drugs or perform surgeries. In the same respect, medical doctors are unable to correct vertebral subluxations. Milwaukee Chiropractors must graduate with a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) Degree as well as pass a challenging four part National Board Examination. Once they have passed the National Board Exam, Chiropractors then need to apply to a professional licensing board and pass another, more difficult and comprehensive test before they are granted licensure to practice. Once licensed, most Chiropractors continue to further their education to stay current with their techniques and practices and maintain qualification for license renewal.
Manual spinal decompression allows the chiropractor to put the patient in a range of different positions and stretches to decompress the joint. This technique is very specific and customized to each individual patients needs every visit. Manual Spinal Decompression Therapy requires the doctor’s full attention. Dr. Koch performs this more thorough and comprehensive technique vs. the programmable table spinal decompression technique used by many other chiropractors.
